The lighting of the giant Sequoia near Edens Hall is an annual tradition at Western Washington University that goes back as long as most folks can remember. Some remember it at least as far back as 1967.
The laborious annual process results in 14,000 LED lights along the tree, which is visible from downtown Bellingham. The tree's height was last estimated in 2009 at 131 feet.
The lights were turned on at midnight Thanksgiving night and will remain up through the end of the year.
Future Woodring Scholars, freshman students at Western Washington University considering pursuing degrees in teaching and education, gathered for a mixer event Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Miller Hall Room 5 on Western’s campus.
The mixer was organized to allow students from two separate cohorts of the Future Woodring Scholars program to meet each other and discuss how the program is going.

About 875 fifth graders from Skagit and Whatcom counties visited Western Washington University on Tuesday, Oct. 21, to see firsthand what a university campus is like. The tour kicked off the sixth year of Compass 2 Campus, a proactive effort that sends trained WWU student mentors into schools in order to get more kids to see themselves as future college students.
