Two new sculptures have been donated to Western Washington University and now hang in the lobby of the Communications Facility on campus.
The two metal sculptures, "Couplet" and "Offshoot," were created by American artist Cris Bruch in 1992, and were donated by the artist and the Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle. The two works were created when Bruch was thinking about how the tension of the material and the writing on the material related to grammar and syntax, according to a proposal from the artist.
Western students prepare for the spring showers by learning the proper mixture and process to plant seeds in the outdoor classroom at The Outback Farm. Outback farm worker Sam Carlos led the seed-starting workshop Tuesday, April 8, as part of The Outback Farm workshop series.
The workshops happen every other week and are focused to give students a chance to be engaged in an outdoor learning environment. For Carlos, this was his first chance to lead a workshop, and was excited to share his knowledge with other students.

Pauline “Polly” Dyer, a tireless advocate for wilderness preservation, received Western Washington University’s honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at Western’s winter commencement ceremony March 22 in Carver Gymnasium.
Murray Dow II, president and CEO of The Dow Hotel Co. in Seattle, gave the commencement address. Dow is a 1970 graduate of Western and a 2013 Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Business and Economics.
Graduating senior Alex Huerta, a Theatre major from Palo Alto, Calif., delivered the student commencement address.
The filling and activation of Fisher Fountain in Red Square is an annual rite of spring at Western Washington University.
In preparation for that event, WWU Paint Shop employees Humberto Duarte and Clinton Burt begain giving the fountain a fresh coat of paint on Monday, March 17.
