Donated pieces added to lobby of CF building

Two new sculptures have been donated to Western Washington University and now hang in the lobby of the Communications Facility on campus.

The two metal sculptures, "Couplet" and "Offshoot," were created by American artist Cris Bruch in 1992, and were donated by the artist and the Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle. The two works were created when Bruch was thinking about how the tension of the material and the writing on the material related to grammar and syntax, according to a proposal from the artist.

Sarah Clark-Langager, Western Gallery director and curator of the Outdoor Sculpture Collection, was pleased with the piece being located in the communications building.

“He maximized the site and achieved a wonderful installation that combines the two works on one wall,” Clark-Langager said.

Since 1988, Bruch has had numerous one-person exhibitions in the Pacific Northwest and in Germany. During this same time, he has received 10 public art commissions from the cities of Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Ore., and Port Angeles. In 2012 his public art project was named one of the top 50 projects in the U.S. by Americans for the Arts. In 2009 the federal General Services Administration gave him the Design Award for Excellence in Art and Architecture for his Portland Transit Authority project.
