Almost 1,700 undergraduate and 180 master’s students graduated from Western Washington University June 11.

Alumni Douglas Dreier (’96, Theatre), Keith Boyd (’95, Political Science) and Bill Kindler (’65, Chemistry) spoke to graduates and their guests at the commencement ceremonies.

It's finals week at Western Washington University, and the sunny weather this past weekend was only a small distraction for the many students preparing for their culminating tests this week.

Weather forecasters are predicting that a few showers will roll in Tuesday and Wednesday but that the sun will return Thursday, with highs in the upper 60s.

Volunteers from the Compass 2 Campus mentoring program at Western Washington University were out on Vendor's Row Thursday handing out free ice cream (donated by Mallard Ice Cream and the Western Alumni Association) to everyone interested in mentoring with the program next year and to those who have mentored in the past.

Western Washington University athletes excelled over the weekend, with three track and field stars and the WWU women's rowing team taking national titles.

Roughly 25 students attended a luncheon seminar in the Wilson Library Reading Room Thursday, May 26, to hear about diplomatic opportunities in the U.S. Foreign Service.

Speaking at the event was U.S. Consul General Phillip Chicola, assisted by vice consul Thomas Duval. The event was sponsored by the Center for Canadian-American Studies, Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies and the U.S. State Department.

John Tuxill, an assistant professor in Western Washington University's Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, is teaching a class spring quarter called "Advanced Seminar in Agroecology." Tuxill took his students to Growing Garden farm in Lynden recently, and WWU alumnus Michael Long, who manages the field operations at the farm, talked to the students about raising sheep and chickens in a rotational grazing system. Growing Gardens also grows herbs and vegetable starts for sale at the Bellingham Food Co-Op and other local spots.

As a way of giving stressed-out students a needed break, the Western Washington University DECA club held a field day Tuesday, May 24, for the WWU community.

The time of fun, competition and relaxation featured inflatable toys,  a water-balloon toss, Sumo wrestling, three-legged races, baseball and more.
