A number of faculty members at Western Washington University were honored at the inaugural Provost/Senate Spring Awards Ceremony held in the Western Gallery on Monday, May 23.

Listed below are the seven winners honored Monday.

Scholars Week, May 16 to 20, is an annual celebration of undergraduate research and creative activities at WWU. It was created by a unanimous resolution of the Faculty Senate in November 1999. What was originally envisioned as "Scholars Day" quickly became Scholars Week in order to accommodate a diverse series of events highlighting the scholarship and creativity of Western undergraduate students.

Despite the rain, the Western Washington University campus was packed with revelers this past weekend during the 100-plus events of Back 2 Belligham. Alumni and community members mingled with students, faculty and staff throughout the weekend at a number of events both on and off campus.

On May 12, members of the Society of Professional journalists student chapter at Western Washington University gathered in Red Square to convey the importance of First Amendment rights to their fellow WWU students.

Rachael Chapman, a Theatre Arts major at Western Washington University with concentrations in acting and education, was surprised in class this week with the Presidential Scholar award from the College of Fine and Performing Arts. CFPA Dean Dan Guyette surprised Chapman in her costume history class on Tuesday, May 3, to hand out the award.

Phillip Chicola, U.S. Consul General to Canada, was the keynote speaker at a gala dinner April 28 celebrating 40 years of regional and national impact by the Center for Canadian-American Studies at Western Washington University.

The next day, April 29, a conference on Canada-U.S. relations was held on Western’s campus, with a luncheon talk by David Emerson, former minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade in the Canadian government.
