Western Washington University's Eleanor Siler became a three-time league champion in the women's 400 meters as she won that event Saturday at the eight-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships in Nampa, Idaho.
The Vikings placed second in the women's division with 97-1/2 points, and they were third in the men's division with 110 points.

Describing higher education in Washington as in "a sorry state" because of a steady erosion in public dollars, gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna laid out a plan he says would gradually increase funding for public colleges and universities as the economy recovers.

The Republican state attorney general, who is making education funding a focus of his campaign, said the state's system is "underfunded and undersized," and is not producing enough degrees, especially in high-demand areas such as science and technology.

Government offices and schools will be closed Monday, Feb. 20, in observance of Presidents Day. Grocery stores, Bellis Fair mall, most retail stores and restaurants will be open.
In addition, most Whatcom County government offices are closed Friday, Feb. 17, for a furlough day. Courts, the senior centers, Lummi Island ferry and a few other services will be operating Friday.

A citizens' group called People for Lake Padden has been conducting a series of tests of the recreational lake's water quality, hoping that the data will provide information for city and county officials to use as they regulate development in its watershed.
"Our focus is on prevention of future impacts, and to address the impacts that we see today," said David Roberts, a retired Washington Department of Natural Resources local assistant manager who is serving as science advisor to the group.
