Seven top officials from area nonprofits will talk about their work at a Local Leaders Seminar, hosted by the human services program at Western Washington University.
The event is free and open to the public, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Academic Instructional Center West lecture hall, Room 210. Parking in lot 12A is free for the event.
Managers from the Bellingham Food Bank, Northwest Youth Services, the Lummi Youth Academy and other agencies will offer an inside look at nonprofit work, discussing what motivates them, an organization's mission and how to do community outreach, among other topics.

Western Washington University's Emily Warman had a NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying mark of 38-2 3/4 in the women's triple jump in final-day action Saturday, Feb. 11, at the University of Washington Flo Track Classic held at the Dempsey Indoor Pavilion in Seattle.

One hundred years ago, the graduating class at Western Washington University started a school tradition by burying a time capsule on campus.
But what they intended for the future to find remains unclear.
University workers opened the 1912 time capsule - along with the 1913 one - Thursday, Feb. 9, to find that a century underground had left most of the contents disintegrated.

Anybody who has passed basic arithmetic can tell you that a 3-pointer is more costly to give up than a 2-pointer, but it takes a basketball coach to figure out the best way to prevent giving up the trey.
Western Washington University men's coach Brad Jackson and his team entered a Thursday, Feb. 9, Great Northwest Athletic Conference showdown with Alaska Anchorage knowing that the Seawolves had three players that were shooting better than 45 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, including two that had more than 100 attempts.

Western Washington University got off to a slow start and never recovered, falling atnationally ranked University of Alaska Anchorage, 72-50, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Thursday, Feb. 9.
The Vikings had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in the GNAC. Reserve center Kayla Bernsen led WWU with nine points and guard Corinn Waltrip had eight.

Whatcom Transportation Authority's board unanimously approved a deal with Western Washington University that would extend the student universal bus pass program for five years.
The board on Thursday, Feb. 9, voted 9-0 to approve the five-year contract extension. The deal is still contingent on WWU student voters approving a fee to continue purchasing thousands of passes in bulk. Student elections will be held in April.

A record number of freshmen have applied to attend Western Washington University.
University officials were surprised by the increase, given that they had moved the deadline for fall quarter from March 1 to Jan. 31. (Universities are doing so in order to notify students earlier.)
Although the deadline has passed, applications continue to trickle in to the university for the estimated 2,800 freshmen spots for the fall quarter.

Whether Western Washington University men's basketball player Paul Jones is on or off the court, he has proven over the past three years he has the ability to adapt to different situations quickly.
On the hardwood, Jones has become the first or second player off the bench for the No. 15 ranked Vikings and has proved to coach Brad Jackson he is a reliable source who can breathe life into WWU as soon as he checks into a game.

Bryant Idzik, a 2008 Mercer Island High School graduate, was selected captain of the renowned Western Washington University Formula SAE Team for the 2011-2012 season. WWU’s Formula SAE Team researches the performance and efficiency of formula-racing vehicles. They are in the midst of designing, fabricating and testing a custom formula racing car from scratch that will ultimately participate in an annual international competition held in Detroit, Michigan, this spring.
