Way across the county, in Charlottsville, Va., former college lacrosse player George Huguely V was convicted of second-degree murder Wednesday in the beating death of his former girlfriend.

Yeardley Love, a lacrosse player like her onetime boyfriend at the University of Virginia, died in May 2010, shortly before she and Huguely were to graduate.

And since the glitz of the Grammy Awards Feb. 12, Chris Brown has been a target on Twitter by county singer Miranda Lambert, who tweeted: "He beat on a girl ... Not cool that we act like that didn't happen."

Forward Rory Blanche had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Paul Jones scored all 15 of his points in the second half as nationally ranked Western Washington University defeated Montana State University Billings 98-83 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest Thursday, Feb. 25, at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
The Vikings completed their regular season 25-4 overall and in first place in the GNAC at 16-2. They were No.14 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll and were No.1in the second NCAA Division II West Region rating released Wednesday.

Forward Kristin Schramm scored 13 of her game-high 26 points in the final eight minutes, leading Western Washington University to a 74-68 victory over Montana State University Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Saturday, Feb. 25, in Billings, Mont.
The Vikings, who were fifth in this week's NCAA Division II West Region ranking, concluded the regular season 20-6 overall and second in the GNAC at 14-4 with their fifth straight victory and eighth in the last nine games.

Western Washington University's Emily Warman improved her NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying mark in winning the women's long jump at the Seattle Pacific University Last Chance Indoor Track and Field meet held Saturday at Dempsey Indoor facility on the University of Washington campus in Seattle.
Warman posted a mark of 18-10, which was 2 1/4 inches better than her previous season best.

Western Washington University fell twice, 11-1 in five innings and 7-5, to Simon Fraser University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 25, in Burnaby, B.C.
WWU fell to 2-10 overall and Simon Fraser improved to 6-1.
A bases-clearing double by Jessica Carey highlighted a four-run WWU sixth inning that tied the nightcap at 5-5. But Simon Fraser scored twice in the bottom of that frame on a two-out home run by Britany Ribeiro.

Ed Johanson, the 44-year-old park ranger killed in a car crash Friday night, is remembered for bringing a breathless passion to his work as a ranger, soccer coach and artist.

The Seabeck resident and father of two sons died on Holly Road when his car was struck head-on just before 8 p.m. The Central Kitsap man whose vehicle struck Johanson's car was arrested for vehicular homicide. Kitsap County Sheriff's Office investigators believe he was impaired by narcotics.
