Americans 60 or older are more likely than ever to have college degrees, helping redefine work and retirement as educated baby boomers swell the senior population at rates faster than young adults earn diplomas.
Census figures released Thursday highlight changes in U.S. college completion, which reached a high of 30.4 percent last year. It comes amid increasing shares of older Americans in the workplace and record drops in employment for young adults, an age twist that is historically unprecedented.

On Monday, Herald reporter Theresa Goffredo detailed a bill introduced by Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, that would auction off state artwork every two years, with the goal of raising a minimum of $5 million each time.

A major jobs-stimulus plan is starting to move again at the Capitol, relying on bonds paid by lottery receipts and taxes on solid waste, oil, pesticides, utilities and other sources already collected.

As outlined by its bipartisan authors, the plan would pay for a growing list of $1.3 billion worth of already-planned projects that would happen sooner with the new funds.

A bill sponsored by state Rep. Tim Probst, D-Vancouver would link funding for state universities to the results they produce.

The bill, HB 2265, easily passed in the House last week and is now in the Senate's higher-education committee. It is co-sponsored by Rep. Larry Haler, R-Richland.

If the current version makes it out of the Senate intact, the bill would lead to outcome-based payments to the state's four-year public universities. The Office of Financial Management by Dec. 1 would have to submit a report on how best to measure and reward the universities' performance.

More than 30 percent of American adults hold bachelor’s degrees, a first in the nation’s history, and women are on the brink of surpassing men in educational attainment, the Census Bureau reported on Thursday. The figures reflect an increase in the share of the population going to college that began in the mid-1990s, after a relatively stagnant period that began in the 1970s. They show significant gains in all demographic groups, but blacks and Latinos not only continue to trail far behind whites, the gap has also widened in the last decade.

Coming off a loss against Central Washington University, which snapped a 10-game winning streak, the Vikings deviated from their fast-paced brand of basketball and smothered SPU with suffocating defensive pressure for 40 minutes, as WWU edged the Falcons 72-70 to sew up a regular season GNAC title and the No. 1 seed in the GNAC Tournament on Feb. 23, at Carver Gym.

Western Washington University men's basketball player Rory Blanche has been selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America NCAA Division II first team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Blanche is a manufacturing engineering technology major with a 3.74 grade point average. He is the first men's basketball player to earn the accolade in the 11-year history of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Guard Trishi Williams had a game-high 20 points on 8-of-10 field-goal shooting, leading Western Washington University to a 72-62 victory over Seattle Pacific University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Thursday, Feb. 23, at Royal Brougham Pavilion on the SPU campus.
The Vikings, who were fifth in this week's NCAA Division II West Region rating, improved to 19-6 overall and 13-4 in the GNAC with their seventh victory in the last eight games. The triumph clinched second place in the GNAC and a first-round bye in next week's conference tournament.

The rap mogul has signed on as an executive producer for the football documentary ‘Undefeated,’ which has been nominated for Best Documentary at this year’s Academy Awards. Diddy will also help produce a feature remake of the story.

The inspirational movie, which is produced by the Weinstein Company, follows a Memphis high school football team through a tough season of ups and downs — on and off the field.
