Backcountry skiers and snowboarders have a new tool to explore regional daily avalanche danger levels.

A web-based map, created by students and faculty at Western Washington University, takes the regional avalanche forecasts issued by the Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center and displays the same information spatially. This allows backcountry travelers to zoom into specific regions and examine the forecast avalanche danger. But it also prevents users from zooming in too closely, because the forecasts are regional, not site-specific.

The Western Washington University men's basketball team was No. 1 for the third straight week in the NCAA Division II West Region ratings announced Wednesday, Feb. 29.
It was the final poll of the season with selections for the West Regional slated for Sunday night. Barring any surprises, the Vikings will be the No. 1 seed and host this year's regional which takes place March 9-12.

Seventeen Western Washington University indoor track and field athletes were named West Region all-stars Wednesday, Feb. 29, by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Six people will tell their stories of volunteering in the Peace Corps as part of a celebration of more than 50 years of service abroad called "Peace Corps Then and Now" on Thursday, March 1, at Western Washington University.
The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Viking Union, room 552.
The Peace Corps recognizes the first week of March as Peace Corps Week to commemorate the signing of President John F. Kennedy's order establishing the federal agency March 1, 1961.

Aspiring actor Sophie Large was 19 years old when she was tragically killed in a car accident near her Chacombe home in 1998.

Her parents Cherry and Stephen Large coped with their loss by setting up a charity in their daughter’s name.
