State lawmakers, for the third year in a row, appear headed into special session to negotiate a state budget.

Gov. Chris Gregoire acknowledged Wednesday that lawmakers need more time to finish their work, saying it's not technically possible to get everything done by the end of the regular session on Thursday.

Rodney Tom and Jim Kastama, state senators from Puget Sound suburbs, both insist they are still Democrats. But they felt they had to do something to stop fellow Democrats from writing a budget strong on gimmicks and weak on reform and sustainability.

So, to the shock of many Capitol observers, these Democrats, along with Sen. Tim Sheldon, of Potlatch, Mason County, bucked their party and joined Republicans in staging a breathtaking coup of the Senate budget.

Friday's Senate revolt, which resulted in a Republican budget passing the Democratically controlled Senate, have blown the minds of Democratic leaders used to getting their way in Olympia.

Three moderate Democrats, Sens. Jim Kastama, Rodney Tom and Tim Sheldon, joined with the Senate's 22 Republicans to create a 25-24 majority. The Republican budget that emerged firmly draws the conversation back to the middle from the far left.

The Vikings, who lost the opener 6-3, are 3-13 overall and 1-5 in GNAC play. MSUB is 7-4 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
