There were signs of a slight thaw in relations between the two parties, after the GOP seized control of the Senate over the weekend and passed its budget with the help of three conservative Democrats, by a 25-24 vote.

A man released from prison in January after serving a 10-year sentence for first-degree rape was arrested early Monday, suspected of breaking into a University District house, threatening six young women with a knife and binding their hands.

The women, ages 19 to 21, are all University of Washington students. One of their roommates hid in her bedroom on the house's main floor and called 911, summoning police who arrested the man before any of the women were injured, according to police and one of the women who lives in the rental house.

The state of Washington could benefit on several fronts from a tax on capital gains.

The tax already in place in 42 states would bring some stability and equity to the current tax system, which has the 20 percent of families with the lowest income paying 17 percent of what they earn on taxes.

By comparison, the 3 percent of families with the highest income pay only 1 percent of their earnings to taxes.

Republicans pulled a coup early Saturday, seizing control of the state Senate to pass a budget radically different from one proposed by the Democratic majority.

The GOP budget passed on a 25-to-24 vote after more than eight hours of procedural battles and heated debate that started Friday afternoon and dragged past midnight.

Republicans succeeded because three conservative Democrats crossed party lines to hand them control of the process.

Normally, professor Michael Medler focuses his research on fires in forests, but when a student he knew died in an avalanche, his thoughts turned to snow in the mountains.
In December 2003, three students from Western Washington University were snowshoeing toward Artist Point by Mount Baker Ski Area when an avalanche buried them overnight. One student wriggled free and found help the following morning, and one miraculously survived being buried for more than 24 hours, but 21-year-old Jacqueline Eckstrom was found dead several feet below the surface.
