Carol Weiss says she isn't one to hit the ceiling when she wins an art award, but the longtime Bellingham resident overcame her fear of flying to accept one of the nation's most prestigious watercolor honors.

Weiss recently became a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and attended the 143rd annual exhibit in New York City in May. It was the third time she was selected for the elite show, qualifying her for signature status, but it was the first show she attended.

In a unanimous vote, Port of Bellingham commissioners have named Port of Seattle executive Charlie Sheldon as the Port of Bellingham's new executive director.

The three commissioners announced Sheldon's selection Tuesday, Oct. 5. Their vote came after two days of deliberations with port staffers, business people and other community members in the wake of a Sunday reception for the three finalists for the job.

Sheldon, 63, has held a number of roles at the Port of Seattle and is now in charge of special projects. Commissioners cited his experience with Sea-Tac airport and marine shipping.

Bellingham police announced Monday, Oct. 4, that despite the massive efforts made in locating a missing Western Washington University student, no new leads have developed.

Dwight A. Clark, 18, vanished after leaving an off-campus party at about 2 a.m. Sept. 26.

There’s no doubt the national concern about the economy is “going to cream some incumbents,” said Todd Donovan, a political science professor at Western Washington University.

But he said Democrats could do better than they did in the primary, when GOP turnout was likely boosted by a marquee U.S. Senate race that saw Dino Rossi fend off his fellow Republican challengers to Sen. Patty Murray.

“Across the state it’s hard to read anything into the primaries, considering that was probably an election that meant more to Republicans than Democrats,” Donovan said.
