For Marlene Koob, it didn't matter about those years when it seemed like Congress might kill Amtrak.

"You just do your job. You know what you're doing is worthwhile. The passengers riding the train are telling you that," she says.

SURVIVING leukemia and a capsized sailboat at night outside the Golden Gate Bridge have given Dave Wilhite the green light not to take each day too seriously. After two near death experiences, Wilhite is grateful to be alive and well enough to race in Sunday's Leukemia Cup Regatta at Belvedere's San Francisco Yacht Club.

Wilhite, a sales representative for Doyle Sails, was diagnosed six years ago with hairy-cell leukemia. While fortunate that he had a reasonably controllable form of the disease, the fact that the leukemia he contracted may have been the result of his exposure to petroleum distillates working around boats and boatyards his whole life was a big wake-up call.

The flicker of hundreds of candles illuminated a portion of Western Washington University’s campus Wednesday night, Sept. 29, in a show of somber support for the family and friends of a missing freshman.

Dwight A. Clark, 18, walked away from an off-campus party in the 1000 block of Indian Street by himself early Sunday morning and has not been seen or heard from since.

Police do not have evidence that a crime has occurred.

Four days have passed since Clark was last seen. Anxious for answers, hundreds gathered on Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil in Clark's honor.

Four days after a college student was last seen leaving a party, searchers have come up empty in the search for 18-year old Dwight Clark.

The Western Washington University student has been missing since he left a party early Sunday morning and never showed up at his Bellingham dorm six blocks away.

After getting instructions from Bellingham police, searchers fanned out across the city to check parks and open fields. Some went door to door looking for the teen.

Western Washington University officials are looking at laying off seven people and reducing funding to several programs in an effort to meet statewide budget cuts.

In response to Gov. Chris Gregoire's request for state agencies to reduce expenses by about 6 percent, WWU is looking to cut the budget by about $3 million during the 2010-11 school year.

The mother of a missing Western Washington University student tearfully pleaded for his safe return Tuesday, Sept. 28, three days after he was last seen leaving an off-campus party.

Whatcom Community and Bellingham Technical colleges are each cutting more than half a million dollars in spending this school year, but exactly how those cuts will be handled is still being discussed on both campuses.

Gov. Chris Gregoire announced earlier this month that the anticipated state deficit has grown to about $520 million through mid-2011, driven mostly by low tax collections. To help close the deficit, Gregoire has asked most state agencies be cut state-funded spending by about 6.3 percent.
