Classical guitarist David Feingold, 55, who began teaching at Western Washington University in 1980 as a guitar instructor, says he has the most comprehensive guitar program of any of the state universities and one of the better programs for guitar in the Pacific Northwest.

He performs at noon Saturday, Oct. 9, at Lynden City Hall as part of the Lynden Music Festival, which runs Wednesday, Oct. 6, through Sunday, Oct. 10, at various locations in Lynden. Middle blocker Emily Jepsen had a match and career-high 19 kills and outside hitter Megan Amundson added 14 kills and a match-high 16 digs as Western Washington University won 25-27, 25-23, 25-17, 25-14 over Simon Fraser University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball contest Saturday, Oct. 2, at West Gym on the SFU campus.

The Vikings, ranked No. 18 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in GNAC play. They were coming off a narrow four-set loss last Saturday at defending GNAC champion Alaska Anchorage that snapped a five-match winning streak.

Western Washington University's Sarah Porter placed third among 302 runners in the Gold Division at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Saturday, Oct. 2, in Louisville, Ky. It is the same venue that the NCAA Division II National Championships will be held on Dec. 4.

Porter ran the 5-kilometer distance in 16:57.98. Placing first was Neely Spence from Shippensburg in a course record 16:32.90, followed by Kristie Krueger from Georgia in 16:37.13. Another Viking, Lauren Breihof, was 35th in 17:46.50.

Forward Claire Morgan had a hand in every goal, scoring twice and assisting on another, as Western Washington University blanked arch-rival Central Washington University, 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer game Saturday, Oct. 2, in Ellensburg.

The Vikings improved to 8-1-1 overall and remained tied for first in the GNAC at 5-1-0. They were coming off a 1-0 win Thursday at No. 5-ranked Seattle Pacific, which snapped the Falcons 45-game (42-0-3) home unbeaten streak.

Western Washington University librarian Rob Lopresti will share the tale of the university's map thief Tuesday, Oct. 5.

In 2006 someone stole maps and books from WWU. A year-and-a-half investigation resulted in a man being convicted of stealing from more than 100 libraries in the U.S. and Canada.

Bellingham Police Lt. Scott Snider is tired.

It's about 11 p.m. on Friday night, Oct. 1, and Snider, who oversees the department's investigations unit, is in downtown Bellingham to brief volunteers who are canvassing streets, handing out fliers and talking to people about a mystery that has permeated the city with a sense of unease - the disappearance of 18-year-old Dwight A. Clark.

Clark, a Western Washington University freshman originally from Auburn, was less than a week into life in Bellingham when he left a party in the 1000 block of Indian Street at about 2 a.m. Sept. 26 and vanished.

Even with no hard evidence of a crime, suspicion continues to build in the case of a Western Washington University student who's been missing for nearly a week. 
Dwight Clark's family and friends held a vigil in his hometown of Auburn, where they wished him a quick and safe return.

More than 100 of Dwight Clark’s family and friends turned out on Saturday for a candlelight vigil at Brannan Skate Park.

Clark, a freshman at Western Washington University has been missing since he left a party early Sunday morning. Clark never showed up at his Bellingham dorm six blocks away. His car remained parked outside his dorm.

Ed Rutschman, music professor at Western Washington University, will teach a class of "Shakespeare and Music" for the public through the Academy for Lifelong Learning program.

The class will explore ways composers have found inspiration in the works of the Bard and will include discussion, reading of parts of plays by Shakespeare, listening to music, and watching DVDs of films, concerts and plays.

The class will be 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 13, 20, 27 and Nov. 3 at WWU's Performing Arts Center. Cost is $44 for academy members, $53 for the general public. To register, call 360-650-4970. The deadline is Oct. 6.
