In the past 50 years, college graduation rates in developed countries have increased nearly 200 percent, according to Education at a Glance 2011, a recently published report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The report shows that while education has improved across the board, it has not improved evenly, with some countries enjoying much greater rates of educational attainment than others. Based on the report, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 developed countries with the most educated populations.

Washington families that are counting on the GET program to pay for college, may not get what they thought they were getting when they signed up.

Guaranteed Education Tuition allows families to buy credits for future tuition. One hundred GET credits equals one year of tuition at the state school of your choice -- assuming you get admitted.

The idea is for parents to start planning for college early and buy credits over time so that when their baby leaves the nest, he can fly right on over to a state school.

It's the prepay plan and it's a pretty good deal given the rising cost of education.

Manette's steel truss bridge remains only in memories, photos and now a bottle-cap mosaic.

The 91-year-old span was torn down after its $60.6 million concrete successor opened on Nov. 10. As the new span rose for 18 months from Port Washington Narrows, David Ryan was creating his own replacement in a Cogean Street garage. For nearly two years, the Bremerton artist flattened 7,000 beer bottle caps and nailed them to a sheet of plywood.

After sitting in the ground for 100 years, the mystery of just what's inside Western Washington University's first time capsule will last a bit longer, after university workers attempted to unearth the capsule Friday afternoon, Feb. 3.
Anthropology professors, university representatives and more than 50 students gathered to watch as WWU grounds crews pried up the bricks around the 1912 plaque on the university's Memory Walk in front of Old Main.

A student club at Western Washington University is hosting a panel discussion about religion in society with several religious groups.
The Freethinkers of WWU's "Ask Us Anything," discussion hopes to "promote an open and honest discussion about religion," said Nicholas Quinlan, Freethinkers member and discussion organizer.

Washington State University's conduct board has sanctioned the Pi Beta Phi sorority after finding the organization responsible for hazing and underage drinking.

Dean of Students Melynda Huskey says that means the sorority will lose its university recognition and support. As a group, the sorority would not be able to use campus facilities or take part in university-related events.

Kristin Schramm scored a game-high 22 points, including nine in a crucial second-half run as Western Washington University defeated Western Oregon University, 68-59, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Thursday, Feb. 2, at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.
The Vikings improved to 14-5 overall and remained second in the GNAC at 8-3. Guard Trishi Williams had 12 points on 4-of-4 field-goal shooting for WWU, and center Britt Harris added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Guard John Allen led a balanced attack with 19 points as nationally ranked Western Washington University let a late lead slip away and claimed an 89-81 overtime triumph over Western Oregon University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest Thursday, Feb. 2, in Monmouth, Ore.
The Vikings, ranked No.16 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll, improved to 19-3 overall and remained atop the GNAC at 10-1. It was the sixth consecutive victory for WWU, which also avenged its only conference loss, an 83-73 defeat in Bellingham on Jan. 7.

The Western Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, in the Concert Hall at the WWU Performing Arts Center.

Admission is free and all attendees receive tickets to the Viking women's basketball game that evening against Saint Martin's University, where the four newest members will also be introduced at halftime.
