Although Western Washington University men's basketball guard John Allen wasn't around to experience the pain and agony of losing 76-75 on a last second layup in overtime to Cal Poly Pomona in the second round of the NCAA Division II West Regional at Carver Gym in 2010, he's certainly heard about it.
"We all talk about that," Allen said. "It was actually a recruiting pitch when (Western) recruited me. They said, 'We lost by one to the eventual national champion.' That bitter taste still lingers over (Carver Gym), and we need to take advantage of what (the Vikings) didn't do in 2010."

Suicide usually happens in silence.
Close friends and family often are the only people to know the truth about how someone ended their life. Obituaries rarely mention suicide. Many media have a policy against reporting it.
In January, Western Washington University took the unusual step of including the student's name in a campuswide email about a suicide off campus. While WWU Director of Communications Paul Cocke said the decision to release the name was not a policy shift, it appears to be part of a more open discussion of suicide and mental illness since the arrival of President Bruce Shepard in 2008.
