Olympic College does not have plans to increase the amount of four-year degrees offered, due to the state budget crisis, but administrators are conducting research into what degrees could be offered when the opportunity returns.

In addition to partnerships with both in and out-of-state universities, OC offers a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, which the college has been accredited by the state to award. The partnered universities; Old Dominion University, Western Washington University, Saint Martin's University and Washington State University, offer four-year degrees from the Bremerton campus, but the degrees are not awarded by OC.

"Things will eventually turn around, so we need to start investigating and researching into those things now," said OC Dean of Instruction Mary Garguile. "We'll continue to look at the options and continue to keep things open."

It's 1 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29. I'm listening to Arabic chanting coming from loudspeakers about a block away. I assume it is from a mosque, and someone is chanting the Koran to calm the neighborhood.
I've already been out on the street with our apartment manager ("bo-ab"), Shabaan, to check out the makeshift barricades (branches, logs, flower pots, blocks of concrete) that have been set up to slow possible looters.

Trail blazing can be tough work. Toiling in the sun, moving 100-pound boulders and contending with irritable scorpions and the occasional wandering javelina poses its challenges, but for the Fire Four AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps team working to develop a system of trails in Casa Grande Mountain Park, the obstacles are part of the fun.

And knowing they are creating something that will be enjoyed by the community for years to come makes the job worthwhile, several team members said.

“These trails will be here for hundreds of years,” said Sarah Rosenbaum, a Fire Four AmeriCorps team member from Massachusetts. “That was one of the things that attracted us to this project.”

On a basketball court, Zach Henifin plays one position.
Whatever.
The 6-foot-5 junior with a stork-like wingspan has started the bulk of the Western Washington University men's basketball season at the guard position. But lately he's been found defending near 7-footers under the basket.
