Carver Gym was billed as "The Pink Zone" to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer, but junior Kristin Schramm and sophomore Corinn Waltrip were just grateful to have the green light to shoot at the time the four starting seniors at Western Washington University needed them most.

For the first time in her role as the "instant energy" provider, Schramm hit four consecutive 3-point shots in the first few minutes of a game. Waltrip made three in a row, including a pair of 3s, during a vital second-half surge just when it seemed the Vikings might be in a bit of trouble.

Here are some numbers that help explain why jaws drop at the first sight of the model-train set that tech entrepreneur Peter Hambling is having built in the basement of his Medina family home:

• The train set uses 4,000 feet of track, 20 miles of wiring, 150 sheets of plywood, more than 50 pounds of wood screws, 15 gallons of Elmer's glue, 2,000 pounds of plaster, 120 train passenger cars, 350 freight cars, 80 locomotives and 40,000 miniature trees ranging from 1 to 20 inches tall.

• To accommodate the project, Hambling had a contractor dig out and build a 3,200-square-foot basement where there used to be a crawl space.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers said Wednesday that they have reached an agreement on a package that patches more than half of an estimated $550 million deficit in this year's state budget.

The agreement trims several state programs, including the state's health care program for the poor and aid for the disabled, as well as transfer funds from other programs. In total, the plan cuts the deficit by about $370 million, with $242 million in cuts and $125 million in transfers.

"Many of the decisions found in this budget agreement are extremely painful ones. They aren't necessarily the decisions we'd embrace if we had a wider set of options before us, but that's a luxury we don't have," said Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, chairman of the Senate's Ways and Means committee. "Our obligation is to bring the current budget into balance, and we intend to meet our obligation."

Home is heaven for the Vikings this season.
And while the Western Washington University student body doesn't pack Sam Carver Gym for every men's basketball game, when they do great things seem possible.

The state's prepaid college-tuition program, known as the Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) program, would be a little less generous for people who buy credits after March 31 of this year under a bill that has been introduced in the state Senate.

The changes are being proposed because tuition is rising rapidly at the state's public colleges and universities, and GET is not keeping up. The program is solvent today, but if every family enrolled in the program tried to cash in at the same time, it would only be able to pay out 86 percent of benefits, leaving a $255 million shortfall, according to one state study.
