A school record tying three home runs and three-hit pitching propelled Western Washington University to an 8-1 victory over Dixie State (Utah) in final-day action at the second annual Desert Stinger Softball Tournament at Majestic Park on Sunday, Feb. 13, at Las Vegas.

The Vikings tied Augustana (S.D.) for the tourney title, both teams going undefeated in five games. The 5-0 start is a school first for Western.

Center Lauren Hefflin scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 field-goal shooting as nationally ranked Western Washington University defeated Simon Fraser University, 82-50, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game Saturday, Feb. 12, at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

Off to its first 4-0 start since 1996, Western Washington University won two more games Saturday at the second annual Desert Stinger Softball Tournament in Las Vegas, nipping Hawaii Hilo 3-2 and defeating Chadron State 9-4.

Winning has never been an unusual thing for the Western Washington University women's basketball program. In 40 years it's rolled up 850 wins, one of just 15 schools in the NCAA to reach that mark in any division.

Arlan Norman, dean of the College of Sciences and Technology at Western Washington University, plans to retire this summer.

Norman has been the dean since 2003 and was the first dean of the college when WWU's colleges were reorganized in 2002.

Western Washington University associate professor of political science Vicki Hsueh has written "Hybrid Constitutions: Making and Unmaking Power and Privilege in Colonial America," published by Duke University Press.

The book examines the charters, constitutions and treaties of early America and investigates how these legal and political instruments were both affected and impacted by colonial encounters.

The Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival marks its 11th year with screenings that document worldwide human rights concerns and efforts to promote positive change.

The festival runs from Thursday, Feb. 17, through Feb. 26 at Western Washington University's Fairhaven College auditorium, Pickford Film Center, Northwest Indian College, Bellingham and Sehome high schools and Bellingham Technical College.

David Jacobson, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, is among the notable speakers scheduled to appear at a border issues conference at Western Washington University.

The conference, entitled "Bridging Differences," is scheduled for April 28-29. It is being organized by WWU's Center for Canadian-American Studies.
