The Associated Students elections for student government are in full swing this week at Western Washington University. Voting, which can be done by WWU students only, is online through 2 p.m. Friday, April 29.

U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) visited Western Washington University today to talk with students about Pell Grants, budget cuts and the AmeriCorp and Students in Service Learning programs.

Inslee, who represents Washington's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, visited with a number of members of student government at WWU during his trip.

The Western Washington University women's crew, ranked No. 1 in the country in NCAA Division II and winner of the past six NCAA Division II national titles, christened its two newest rowing shells Saturday at Lake Samish.

The eight, a Vespoli V1, was named the "Peter Rynders," in honor of long-time friend of Western Athletics Peter Rynders. The four, also a Vespoli V1, was named the "Karla L" in honor of former Viking assistant coach and rower Karla Landis.

The sun has arrived for the weekend, but rains are expected to return Sunday and last through much of next week. Still, the arrival of warmer weather and the occasional sunbreak has meant a bursting forth of flower blooms on plants throughout campus as students take to the outdoors.

The Humans vs. Zombies tag game (using Nerf blasters) is happening now on campus. The game takes place through April 13, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Humans Vs. Zombies is a game in which a group of pre-registered players (humans) attempt to survive the growing zombie infestation on campus (posed by other players tagging the humans). The human players fend off the zombie players by launching foam Nerf darts at the zombie players. Humans wear bright orange armbands on the upper arm, and zombies wear orange bands on their foreheads.

In addition to viewing the art of others, visitors to the new "Drawing Jam" exhibit in the VU Gallery on campus will be able to create their own art.

The exhibit showcases the ability of everyone to create art and highlights the organic nature of creativity and freedom of expression.

The exhibit, which opened April 4, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until April 22 in the Viking Union Gallery, VU Room 507. The opening reception is 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 5 in the VU Gallery.

Malalai Joya, from Afghanistan, presented “A Woman Among Warlords” on Monday, April 4, in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall on campus.

She spoke about the current crisis in Afghanistan, focusing on the situation facing women and the poor. Joya works with communities of poor Afghans in supporting schools, a clinic and other facilities.

The Ross Engineering Technology Building, named for former Western Washington University president G. Robert Ross, was completed in 1987. Ross died in a plane crash in 1987 that also killed administrators Don Cole and Jeanne DeLille.

The Engineering Technology building houses most of the offices, classrooms and labs for Western's Engineering Technology department.

Rain has been falling hard on the Western Washington University campus for hours, and weather experts predict that at least a couple of inches will fall before the storm lessens late Thursday.

It's the second day of spring quarter on campus, and students, faculty and staff alike have been leaning against the rain and sidestepping puddles as they walk through campus.

Ron Bundy, CEO of Russell Index Group of Russell Investments of Seattle, addressed the winter commencement ceremony at Western Washington University March 19 in Carver Gymnasium. Approximately 530 undergraduates and 30 master’s candidates received degrees winter quarter. Winter commencement includes all majors, and only one ceremony took place.
