Named to the second team was Western senior center Jessica Summers.

Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics has opened a new Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Bellingham and hired Jennifer Shelton as the director.

Shelton comes to Bellingham from the Edmonds Community College SBDC, and has worked in the field of business development and research for 17 years, including a stint at the Center for Economic Development (CEV).

“It’s great to be back in Bellingham and Whatcom County. There are few business communities that have as diverse and interesting to work with as this one; it’s going to be very rewarding to be a part of it again,” she said.

A man began trial Tuesday, March 9, on charges that he broke into an apartment and raped a Western Washington University student in 2007.

Charles F. Boome, 45, is charged with first-degree burglary and first-degree rape. A Whatcom County Superior Court jury heard opening statements Tuesday afternoon.

Three Western Washington University players have been named to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Star Women's Basketball Team announced Tuesday, March 9.

Selected to the first team were junior guard Amanda Dunbar and senior center Jessica Summers. Senior forward Willow Cabe was a second-team pick. Dunbar and Summers were both second-team choices last year.

An Oregon Senator's accusations about environmental problems on the Bellingham waterfront are off the mark, Port of Bellingham Environmental Director Mike Stoner said Tuesday, March 9.

Stoner was responding to U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden's contention that environmental issues should disqualify Bellingham as a potential site for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine Operations Center. The Oregon Democrat made those contentions in a letter to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, whose department includes NOAA.
