House Democrats released their list of proposed cuts on Thursday to deal with a projected $1.1 billion shortfall for the current state budget.

Their caucus web page says the list is preliminary, but notes that their proposal would not eliminate either the state Basic Health Plan or the Disability Lifeline program. Gov. Chris Gregoire's list of proposed cuts would eliminate basic health and largely get rid of Disability Lifeline.

EMERGENCY cuts to the state budget are now a necessity, and an immediate special session of the Legislature is the best way to get them. Gov. Chris Gregoire knows this. The Republican legislative leaders know it, and have cooperated with her. But she has been having trouble with her fellow Democrats.

They need to get real.

Instead, they look away from the crevasse in the financial firmament. They want to look at all the options. They want to check with their constituents. They want to stroke their chins.

Washington's state employee unions are on the hot seat as Gov. Chris Gregoire searches for ways to keep the state from going off a budgetary cliff.

The state reopened contract negotiations last month with some of their unions, and negotiators met for the first time on Tuesday to discuss agreements that expire in June. Possible concessions being proposed by the state include furloughs, pay cuts and reduction in work hours.

Vince Nappo, a former resident of “The Evergreen State,” swears there is. “For example,” says the actor, “people there say ‘college’ very differently. ‘KAWL-edge.’ ”
Nappo is a graduate of Western Washington University in Bellingham. So he knows that the way he speaks — with an accent that comes from Woodhaven, Mich. — was not the reason he was chosen to play a native Washingtonian in “The Tangled Skirt.”

It's a compilation of 88 true stories and poems about what the contributors learned from their mothers.

Bowen, 57, is an accountant with Holland Health Services in Mount Vernon and the father of two teenage girls. He has pledged half of the profits from sale of the book to shelters for abused mothers and children. Bowen has lived in Whatcom County for 38 years and holds two degrees from Western Washington University.
