Anita K. Boyle and her partner, Jim Bertolino, have written collaborative poetry, so it's fitting they won a "dynamic duo" award in November for their joint volunteer work for Whatcom Humane Society.

Every Monday, they travel from their rural home north of Bellingham to the society's Baker Creek shelter to spend several hours photographing one to two dozen cats and dogs up for adoption.

Nationally ranked Western Washington University held Montana State University Billings without a field goal for the first four-and-a-half minutes of overtime and claimed an 80-70 victory in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball opener for both schools on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Sam Carver Gymnasium.

The Vikings, ranked No. 20 in the latest USA Today/ESPN/Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Top 25, remained undefeated at 5-0. Guards Megan Pinske, Amanda Dunbar and Corinn Waltrip combined for 54 Western points, with Pinske scoring 19, Dunbar 18 and Waltrip a career-high 17.

Western Washington University senior Sarah Porter completed a magnificent cross country career as she was runner-up for the second straight year at the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday, Dec. 4, on a snow covered course at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.

ON THE ONE hand, says Bellingham craftsman Stan Miller, the gorgeous mandolins he makes are essentially "a box with a stick at one end."

Of course, that's like saying the Sistine Chapel is an auditorium with a colored ceiling. Miller's mandolins are a combination of grace, musical tone and muscle: wood-shaved cardboard-thin but engineered so robustly the instruments can withstand 180 pounds of pressure and pling like an angel.

In a surprise move, Gov. Chris Gregoire has agreed the state will pay 85 percent of health-care premium costs for state workers in the next two-year budget.

The governor had previously pushed for the state to pay 74 percent of the premium and for state workers to pick up 26 percent of the costs, arguing the state could not afford to pay more money for health care. The state faces a $5.7 billion shortfall in the next two-year budget.
