The event is noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. Along with a scholarship awards program, participants will have a French American Holiday Lunch prepared by the Culinary Arts students at the Bellingham Technical College.

Watching basketball games from the sidelines wasn't the hardest part of redshirting last season for Western Washington University senior Gabby Wade.

That part was tough mind you, but not the worst part. No that honor belonged to being in the locker room before games while her teammates readied themselves, pulled on their uniforms and psyched themselves up. That's when Wade was left with nothing much to do but think about next year.

A sprinkler pipe burst in Western Washington University's Old Main building Tuesday evening, Nov. 23, causing water damage to offices on four floors.

About 6:30 p.m., a 2.5-inch sprinkler pipe burst in the ceiling above the fifth floor due to the frigid temperatures, said Tim Wynn, director of facilities management. The pressurized pipe sent water flowing for about 30 minutes down four floors as people evacuated the building and fire crews assessed the situation, Wynn said.

On a 4-3 vote, the Whatcom County Council has approved a $3 surcharge on all Lummi Island ferry tickets, effective in 60 days.

The surcharge means that a $10 car-and-driver single ticket will increase to $13, while a $4 pedestrian ticket increases to $7. A 25-trip car pass that now costs $160 will cost $235. That's an increase of $75, to cover the $3 surcharge on all 25 trips.

The increase in a 25-trip pedestrian pass is steep under the surcharge plan: A pass that now costs $40 will be $115.

After the school district lost one of its drug and alcohol counselors because of a loss of funding, the district is hoping a new student mentorship program will help keep students away from drugs.

The drug and alcohol counselor handled more than 40 student cases at both Snohomish and Glacier Peak high schools last school year. The district lost its grant funding for the position, and it cannot afford to fund the position with the current budget.
