State lawmakers have started assessing potential ideas on how to fix the state's budget situation, hearing proposals Monday that would further reduce teacher salaries, release prisoners early and eliminate virtually all substance abuse services.
None of the plans have been endorsed by lawmakers or their staff members. Legislative leaders are simply starting the process of reviewing options to find about $2 billion in cuts before a special session that starts at the end of November.

Representatives from the College at Brockport's Residential Life/Learning Communities program were chosen to showcase Brockport's residential education program at a recent conference at Penn. State.
The American College Personnel Association's Curriculum Institute at Penn. State chooses colleges to showcase their programs at an annual event, which was held Sept. 29 to Oct. 2. Sara Kelly, coordinator of Residential Education, and David Bagley, director of Residential Life/Learning Communities, represented Brockport at this year's event.

Western Washington University holds a one-stroke lead over two teams and just three shots separate the top 11 players in medalist play heading into the final round at the 18th Annual Viking Invitational being played at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club on Monday, Oct. 10.
The Vikings, ranked No. 8 in the National Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25, shot a 15-over par 303 on the 6,028-yard course and hold a one-shot advantage over No. 21 Sonoma State and Grand Canyon in the 11-team field.
