While many teenagers enjoyed their summers cooling off at beaches, one Mariner High School student spent this past summer swimming alongside the creatures that live in those beaches.

Brijonnay Madrigal, a senior at Mariner was selected for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean for Life ocean research program this summer.

In July, Brijonnay went on a trip to the University of Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, Calif. She spent eight days at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Channel Islands off the coast of Santa Barbara to conduct field research on sea life.

My friend K.C. Sulkin, who attends many jazz gigs in town, is helping to organize a benefit to raise money for the Sudden Valley community to fund a permanent library in what's commonly called the Dance Barn.
Sulkin owned a jazz club in London and he knows his stuff. For the benefit, which takes place 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Dance Barn (take Gate 2), he has rounded up Western Washington University's Jazz Collective, a group that plays on Wednesdays at Blue Horse Gallery & Café. Mike Allen, a Vancouver, B.C., tenor sax player, heads up the jazz program at Western; he's joined by pianist Miles Black, bassist and vocalist Adam Thomas (ask him to sing some Chet Baker), and Bellingham drummer Julian MacDonough.

SSA Marine, which is proposing the exporting of some 48 million tons of coal a year plus 8 million tons of other commodities, continues to have problems because of an illegal tree-clearing operation in August.

After nearly two hours of deliberations Tuesday night, the Tigard City Council came to an unanimous decision to approve Martha "Marty" Wine as their pick for city manager. Wine, 42, confirmed she is moving forward on negotiations with the city.

"I'm very impressed with the caliber of people and services [in Tigard]," Wine said. "I'm excited to work together to move issues forward."

Craig Prosser retired as Tigard's city manager at the end of July after six years on the job. At the time of his retirement, his salary was about $138,000, according to city human resources director Sandy Zodrow, who said Wine's salary offer would be in the vicinity of that.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and its award-winning Phuture Phoenix program will mark a major milestone this month, when the school hosts its 10,000th visitor for the annual Phuture Phoenix Day.

More than 1,400 area fifth-graders from 26 elementary schools in 10 Northeastern Wisconsin school districts will visit classrooms, residence halls, the Cofrin Library and other parts of campus Tuesday, Oct. 11 and Thursday, Oct. 13. They also will connect with more than 250 UW-Green Bay student mentors who volunteer as tour guides.
