Larry Farr has announced his candidacy for the Ward 3 City Council seat that Barry Buchanan is expected to vacate as he launches his mayoral campaign.
As things stand now, Farr would face off against Cathy Lehman, director of the Whatcom County chapter of Futurewise. Lehman announced her candidacy for the Ward 3 seat earlier in the week.
Farr also sought the seat in 2007 but lost to Buchanan in the general election, with Buchanan garnering 58 percent of the vote.

It’s no wonder Vikings women’s basketball coach Carmen Dolfo wastes little time putting Kristin Schramm in games. A player this hot could burn up the bench. Schramm scored 23 points, including 15 in about five minutes during a crucial first-half run, in her usual sixth man role to help Western Washington University defeat Montana State Billings 76-49 on Wednesday, March 2, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal at Sam Carver Gym. The Vikings, who were ranked No. 11 in the latest national poll, will now host Alaska-Anchorage, a 68-66 winner over Seattle Pacific, in the championship game on Saturday, March 5. “I come off the bench,” said Schramm, who shot 9 for 13 and 4 for 5 from 3-point land. “I guess my role is to try and change the game and try and get everyone going. And that’s what I really look to do with my scrappiness. ... My offense comes when I work hard, I guess.”

For all things optional, money is disappearing. For the things we like government to do, but don’t absolutely insist upon, support is fading and, for some, soon to vanish. The unavoidables are chewing it away. On the state level, that means that constitutionally mandated spending on K-12 education and must-funds like health care, prisons, public safety, employee benefits, interest and debt payments, are eating up everything else. On the federal level, it’s the entitlements like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, along with defense and debt doing most of the chewing.

If it isn’t on the must-fund list, no matter how valuable or beneficial, funding will be in jeopardy. It can’t be helped. Look at higher education in Washington, our state universities and community colleges. They once were our pride, their contribution to society unquestioned, their necessity in a modern world obvious. Their research and contributions to science, medicine and agriculture sent great waves of energy through the economy. The idea that any student with talent and modest means could walk up and attend one of the finest universities in the world, with most of the cost covered by taxpayers, we thought was one of the ultimate aims of a democratic society. Opportunity for all was a noble goal.

Funding for higher education was on the mind of hundreds of students, faculty and community members today with both a community forum and an on-campus rally highlighting the issue.

In the face of continuing severe budget cuts to higher education facilities, such as Western Washington University, Bellingham Technical College and Whatcom Community College, as well as a decrease in grants and available funding for students, concerned citizens expressed their concerns.

“The time to be silent is over,” said WWU student trustee Ramiro Espinoza at the mid-morning rally.
