The rhetorical volleys exchanged in the battles over collective bargaining in such states as Ohio and Wisconsin have aimed straight for the gut. When governors and legislators have proposed bills to strip the collective bargaining rights of public employees -- a group that in those and other states includes faculty members -- supporters of these bills have framed the situation in two dire words: "We're broke."

In response, the rebuttals have heaped scorn on the authors of such measures, or more precisely, "shame," as the refrain went Thursday in Ohio after the state Senate passed its bill.

It's a reminder of her globe-trotting daughter Jessica who, now in her 30s, has recently returned from Azerbaijan, where she served for more than two years as a Peace Corps volunteer.This month, the Peace Corps is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and Jessica spent part of her week in Bremerton talking to Soroptimists and others about the Peace Corps and the Azerbaijani people.

As long as Whatcom Transportation Authority plans to restore Sunday bus service, staff thought they'd consider making changes to other bus routes.

On Tuesday, March 8, the agency will hold a hearing on the proposed changes.

The Bellingham Transportation Benefit District plans to contract with WTA to restore Sunday bus service in Bellingham. The proposal is to restore all buses except for Route 10 Birchwood and half of Route 401 Fairhaven.

The Vikings won't be home for the entire postseason, but at least they'll have a chance to get some payback.

The Western Washington University women's basketball team was named a No. 4 seed in the West Regional of the NCAA Division II National Tournament on Sunday, March 6, meaning they'll take on No. 5 seeded University of Alaska-Anchorage in the opening round.

The Seawolves defeated the Vikings 68-67 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament championship game on Saturday, March 3, to snap Western's home win streak at 26 games. The Vikings (26-3) also needed a win for a chance to host the West Regional.

Western Washington University pitcher Erika Quint tossed a three-hit shutout in the first game to spark the Vikings women's softball team to a sweep of doubleheader against Saint Martin's University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Sunday at SMU field.

The Vikings, ranked No.23 in latest national Division II Top 25 Poll, won the first game 2-0 and the second 8-7 to improve to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. It is the best start in school history and just four shy of the school record for consecutive wins.

Western Washington University pitcher Erika Quint had her third double-digit strikeout effort of the season and the nationally ranked Vikings had 23 hits to remain undefeated by sweeping a softball doubleheader with Saint Martin's University, 8-4 and 9-3, to open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday, March 5, in Lacey.

The Vikings, ranked No.23 in this week's regular-season National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 7-0 overall as they played for the first time since Feb. 13.
