Western Washington University scored a record 181 points in winning its third consecutive GNAC All-Sports title, according to final official figures released by the conference office Monday, May 23.

Points are awarded (on a two-point increment) based on the final finishes in each of the conference's 16 sports - football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's indoor track & field, men's and women's outdoor track & field, men's and women's golf, baseball and softball.

The Vikings, who have won seven all-sports titles in the 10-year history of the conference, broke their own record of 167 points they registered in winning the 2009-10 title.

Player-manager Dan Skillman grinned and shook his head with amusement when asked what it took to get "over the hump," giving Western Washington University's student-coached club baseball team a chance to play in the national championship tournament after three consecutive near-misses.

"I guess it took four guys from Sehome," he said with perfect deadpan, as those four guys burst into laughter while talking about how Western qualified for the National Club Baseball Association World Series for the first time.

Utility player Kristen Allen, who earned All-America and region all-star honors as a sophomore at Bellevue Community College, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Western Washington University. Making that announcement was Viking head coach Amy Suiter.

Allen received Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America and Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Northern Region all-star recognition this spring. She ranked second among NWAACC batting leaders with a .575 average (65 for 113), while tying for eighth in runs batted in with 47 and tying for ninth in home runs with nine.

Western Washington University student and Lake Stevens resident Dana Rafter received a Critical Language Scholarship by the U.S. Department of State to study Arabic language and culture in Tunis, Tunisia from May 30-Aug. 1.

The Critical Language Scholarship will fund all expenses for Rafter’s trip, including airfare, accommodation and language courses.
