We realize that Rob McKenna and Jay Inslee might not be the only major candidates who run for governor in 2012. But given that each is the early favorite for his party's nomination, we can't help looking forward to the invigorating, ideas-oriented campaign a McKenna-Inslee matchup could provide. 

At such a pivotal time in our state's history, with real questions about the future availability of good jobs and whether our children will have the skills they need to get them, we're glad to have at least two public-policy heavyweights in the race.

A lesbian who sued the University of Washington after her boss told her not to "flaunt" her sexual orientation has grounds for a discrimination complaint, the state Court of Appeals ruled Monday.

The decision was a reversal of a lower court's dismissal of the case.

Debra Loeffelholz, a program manager at the UW's asbestos department, sued the school in 2009, alleging a hostile work environment from 2003 to 2006.

She said her boss, James Lukeheart, had asked her if she was gay soon after she was hired. When Loeffelholz said yes, Lukeheart said he was okay with it.

But he added, "I just don't want you to flaunt it. I don't want any of that in my face," Loeffelholz said in her complaint.

Peter Freer filled departing Assembly member Bob Doll’s seat, while Malcolm Menzies steps into the slot left by recent appointee Katherine Eldemar. Both new members received their appointments by unanimous consent of the Assembly.

Freer has been a Juneau resident since 1949, moving from Seattle. He graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1966, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Puget Sound and a Bachelor of Science from Western Washington University’s Huxley College. Freer has been active in the state and local government and the local arts scene. He served on the Assembly from 1983-1987.
