A watched pot never boils, and the saying probably felt true of potatoes as well Saturday, Sept. 24, as dozens of volunteers tried to break the record for the world's largest potatoes au gratin in Mount Vernon.
The Guinness World Record attempt started at 9 a.m. downtown, and after hours of stirring, adding ingredients and slaving over the steaming potatoes as crowds gathered to watch, the dish got served up at about 3:30 p.m.

The Federation of Fly Fishers got its start in the early 60s at the mouth of the Grande Ronde River when Bill Nelson of Eugene, Ore., met up with some buddies, had a few drinks, and talked about the importance of a national organization to look after their sporting interests.

Nelson, an Everett boy who had been a member of the Evergreen Fly Fishing Club in his hometown, had this to say about the Ronde in an oral history recorded by Western Washington University in 2007: "At the time, that was the best steelhead fishing in the world."

Western Washington University made a huge statement Saturday as both its men's and women's teams placed third at the Runners Soul Erik Anderson Cross Country Invitational held at the Plantes Ferry Complex.
The meet, which had nearly 500 collegiate runners participating, was serving as the regional preview. Later this fall, the course will be the site of both the West Regional meet and NCAA Division II National Championships.

Western Washington University tied for second in an 11-team field at its 40th annual Viking Men's Golf Invitational that ended Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.
WWU, ranked No. 8 in the Golf Coaches Association of America Preseason Coaches Top 25 Poll, shot a 3-over par 291 in the final round for a 36-hole total of 584.

Democratic leaders say it's premature to talk about tax increases as they prepare for a special budget-cutting session in November, but they've already checked with the secretary of state to see when a referendum could go on the ballot.

Gov. Chris Gregoire said Thursday she would call the Legislature back for a 30-day session starting Nov. 28 to deal with a projected budget shortfall of at least $2 billion.
