As Drowsy Driving Prevention Week gets underway, one family is raising awareness by sharing an amazing survival story.

Nothing is apparently too small to cut when faced with a $2 billion state budget shortfall.

Gov. Chris Gregoire sent out a directive Friday telling agencies, among other things, to look for ways to reduce the number of cellphones and land lines and shrink the size of the state's fleet of cars and trucks.

In addition, the governor plans to take action that would extend from seven to 10 years the requirement for new automobile license plates; eliminate the printing and distribution of state wall calendars; and increase use of electronic communications, such as email, for state correspondence.

Records released to The Associated Press under state public records laws show it is something that hasn’t happened in any biennium dating back at least a quarter of a century, when accounting processes changed.

It’s not entirely clear whether the state is allowed to have such deficits.

Husky Stadium is one of the most beautiful settings to watch a college-football game in the country. And it's certainly one of the loudest.

So when the University of Washington decided to rebuild two-thirds of Husky Stadium, the goal was to keep it the same, but make it better.

Amplify the noise. Preserve the view. Hang onto the stadium's two grandstand roofs, which punctuate the landscape like a set of airborne quotation marks. But rip out and redo the 90-year-old concrete lower bowl, dismantle and rebuild the 60-year-old south stadium, remove the track, bring fans closer to the action, and turn the cold, utilitarian underbelly into an inviting new concourse.

Childhood. That stage in life everyone experiences, when everything is new and the only limit is your own imagination. As a young boy, I was very much the stereotype. A stick was a sword, the ground was lava, every tree was a tower to be scaled, and every bush held dragons to be slain.
