Balance is one universal technique that should be applied to all aspects of one’s existence in order to attain the optimal quality of life. Of late, the international community has come to question the effects of physical training on the human body.

Previously, it was taken as given, that physical training leads to a well-rounded individual. This myopic view automatically glorified the athlete as a superior physical form of the homo-sapiens.

The only other dimension added to this analysis was that of academics, and even personal life and activities tended to get overshadowed. Many are still blind followers of the same rule.

The flyer and I landed in Matt Krogh's Bellingham office on the same October afternoon. I had stopped by to hear why he thought building the country's largest coal port just north of town was a bad idea; the four-page full-color mailing had arrived to try to convince him otherwise.

That day, tens of thousands of the flyers filled mailboxes in the northwest corner of Washington state. Indeed, promoting the port is Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, owned by Warren Buffett's holding company; Peabody Energy, the world's largest coal company; and SSA Marine, the world's largest cargo terminal operator, half of which is owned by Goldman Sachs.

Chris Gregoire initially balked, but this week changed her mind and now supports reducing the school year by four days. Still, she wants to avoid that and other cuts by increasing the sales tax statewide by a half-cent.
