It's a view many students on campus hold now – our polls show that x% of students expect to be more than $20,000 in debt by the time they finish their studies. What does an extra few thousand matter then?

For in-state students looking to transfer in the near future, options have recently become more limited.

In a move that they hope will help them weather upcoming cuts, two state universities have opted to increase the number of out-of-state and international students and, consequently, decrease the number of residents they accept.

For several years, the University of Washington's (UW) target enrollment for the freshman class has been roughly 4,000 residents and 1,500 non-residents.

Union High School freshmen get glimpses into teacher Randy Cate’s other career when they show up for English class. Vinyl records decorate his classroom, and he shows students Ted Nugent’s “Tied Up In Love” music video on YouTube.

Cate, 62, collaborated with Nugent on the song. High schoolers today might not fill their iPod playlists with Nugent hits, but they’re likely familiar with some of the recent television shows on which Cate’s work can be heard, including “True Blood,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “The Young and the Restless.”

It's no secret that state colleges and universities are going to get hammered in the final 2011-13 state budget being negotiated by the state House and Senate budget leaders.

The Senate budget would cut $643 million from universities and colleges. The Senate offsets part of the cut by allowing tuition increases of 16 percent for the University of Washington, Washington State University and Western Washington University; 14 percent for Central and The Evergreen State College; 11 percent for Eastern and 12 percent for community colleges.
