X-Prize Finals, Day 1: Tech Inspection

Western's VRI X-Prize team and its Viking 45 car have started to compete in the Progressive Automotive X-Prize's Finals today in Brooklyn, Mich., outside Detroit, at the Detroit International Speedway.

Day 1 of the $10 million competition consists of the Tech Inspection, where race officials go over each vehicle with a fine-toothed comb to make sure it passes all the necessary safety tests and race regulations.

After this week's competitions have ended, the vehicles will be shipped to an independent laboratory for testing prior to the announcement of the winners. After starting the competition more than a year ago with more than 140 teams, there are now just a dozen teams and 15 vehicles left.
