WWU to Host Artists of the PNW Coast in Speaker Series This Winter

BELLINGHAM – The Western Washington University Department of Art will host a lecture series this winter bringing four artists to campus to discuss historical and contemporary Northwest artistic practices.

The events are free and open to the public.

Lectures will center on visual works and/or historical research on Pacific Northwest Coast art. In conjunction with the series, Julia Sapin, professor of Art History and chair of the Art Department, will offer a course covering “Indigenous Arts of the Pacific Northwest Coast.”

All events will take place in Miller Hall 138 on Western’s campus. The speakers and dates and times for the talks are:

  • 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15: Felix Solomon, “Carving Tools and Techniques”
  • 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday Jan. 21: James Madison, “Generations”
  • 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb.19: Melonie Ancheta, “Ancient Color”
  • 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, “What if there is no plan?”
