WWU student to share of his work in Egypt during Mubarak's fall

Michael Downey, a liberal arts student at Western Washington University, will analyze the recent upheaval in Egypt from the perspective of his unique personal experiences in a presentation planned for noon Tuesday, May 10, in College Hall Room 131.

Downey's presentation, “Egypt in Revolution: A Personal Account,” is sponsored by the Center for International Studies at WWU.

While studying at the American University in Cairo, Downey was able to interview members of the Muslim Brotherhood and write an article later published by the World Policy Institute and commented upon by The Atlantic, Columbia Journalism Review and numerous media outlets. This created an additional opportunity for him to travel to Egypt during its recent revolution to write more articles and work on a documentary about the role of art in the revolution. Based on his experiences teaching in the West Bank, living in Cairo and traveling across the Middle East, Downey will talk about the preconditions that led to the uprising and the developing aftermath in the wake of Hosni Mubarak's fall.

This presentation is free and open to the public.
