WWU Hosts Lecture on 'Yoga in Philosophy and Religion' at Firehouse Performing Arts Center May 10

BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s Department of Liberal Studies will present a lecture by religions scholar Christian Lee Novetzke, titled “Stretching Religion: Yoga in Philosophy, Temple Architecture and Gandhi's India,” from 4-5:30 p.m. on May 10 at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center in Fairhaven.

The talk is part of the Department of Liberal Studies’ Distinguished Speakers Series and is free and open to the public.

Novetzke is an associate professor in the University of Washington’s South Asia Studies Program, Comparative Religion Program and International Studies Program at UW’s Jackson School of International Studies.

He earned a master’s degree in Theological Studies from Harvard University and a doctorate from Columbia University. Novetzke is considered an expert on religion, history and culture in South Asia, and his book, “Religion and Public Memory: A Cultural History of Saint Namdev in India,” was named the Best First Book in the History of Religions by the American Association of Religion.
