WWU Center for Service-Learning to show film 'Taking Root: the Vision of Wangari Matthai' Jan. 20

Western Washington University’s Center for Service-Learning will be showing the documentary "Taking Root: the Vision of Wangari Matthai" at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, in Viking Union 552.

This event is free and open to the public.

How does the simple act of planting trees lead to winning the Nobel Peace Prize? Ask Wangari Maathai of Kenya. In 1977, she suggested rural women plant trees to address problems stemming from a degraded environment. Under her leadership, their tree-planting grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, defend human rights and promote democracy.

WWU Center for Service-Learning is showing this documentary in connection with the faculty-led Study Abroad Program in Kenya, which will take place summer quarter 2011. There will be a short informational session about the summer trip to Kenya after the film.
