WWU Big Band and Faculty Jazz Collective to perform June 3

Western Washington University’s Department of Music will present an evening of jazz featuring the student WWU Big Band, Faculty Jazz Collective, and special guests at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 3 in the PAC Concert Hall.

Composed of 18 students, the WWU Big Band will perform for the first half of the evening. Their set list for the night features a variety of jazz standards, including Dizzy Gillespie’s “Groovin’ High,” Duke Ellington’s “Concert for Cootie,” and “There Will Never Be Another You” by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon.

The second half of the night will feature the WWU Faculty Jazz Collective comprised of Mike Allen (saxophones), Julian MacDonough (drums), Adam Thomas (bass and voice), and Miles Black (piano and guitar). In addition, the Collective will be joined by special guests Bill MacDonough (piano), Cheryl Jewell (voice), Josh Cook (tenor sax), and Thomas Harris (tenor sax).

The performance marks the culmination of the first year of the revamped Jazz Studies area at WWU. Headed up by Mike Allen, the program has added a vocal jazz component to its curriculum and now features a greater range of study for instruments and jazz combos.
