BELLINGHAM – Kevin Dixey will present "My Field Guide: Using Grassroots Digital Media to Promote the Environment" as part of Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at noon on Friday, Dec. 2 in Academic West room 304 on the Western campus.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Dixey will present a field guide that promotes awareness of local wild areas through the use of digital media tools, social media and community. As a starting point for this field guide, he produced a video walking tour of the Stimpson Family Nature Reserve near Bellingham in cooperation with the Whatcom County Land Trust. Built with readily available digital tools, the video walking tour is an example of using digital media to help protect and preserve local wild spaces.

Dixey is a staff member at Western Washington University specializing in the training and support of using digital design and media tools. He is a graduate of the master’s degree program at Western’s Huxley College of the Environment. His love for the environment came from growing up in rural Florida where with a trip into the back yard you could find anything from a Florida box turtle eating last night’s Alpo to an Eastern Diamondback sunning itself on the concrete pad by his trash cans. He hopes to be able to create walking tours all over Whatcom County. He lives in Bellingham with his wife Jennifer and their eight-year-old son.

Anyone interested in this topic is encouraged to come and participate; the presentation will include a question-and-answer period. The speaker series is held by Western's Huxley College of the Environment to bring together the environmentally minded community and other interested members of the WWU and Bellingham communities.  Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.
