Western to take part in regional earthquake exercise June 7

Western Washington University will be participating in a regional earthquake exercise called Cascadia Rising on the morning of June 7. Emergency Operations and Coordination Centers at all levels of government and the private sector will activate to conduct a simulated field response operation within their jurisdictions and neighboring communities to address a scenario of a 9.0-magnitude earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone and a resulting tsunami. 

Multiple departments across campus, both academic and administrative, have collaborated in designing an exercise for Western that will enable the emergency response team to increase our general preparedness, improve skills and ensure maximum readiness at the university.

Activities related to the drill will not be disruptive to finals in progress and will include:

• Set up of triage tents on the Communications Facility Lawn
• Windshield surveys conducted by Facilities Management personnel
• Activation of Western’s Emergency Operations Center
