BELLINGHAM – Noted Pacific Northwest maritime artist Steve Mayo will give a presentation titled “Capt. Vancouver’s H.M.S. DiscoveryRe-Imagined: Creating an Accurate Historical Painting,” at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20 in Western Libraries Special Collections (Wilson Library 6th floor) on the Western Washington University campus.

The presentation is free and open to the public, and is co-sponsored by Western Art Department.

The discussion will describe the new research behind his latest watercolor painting of Capt. George Vancouver’s vessels, H.M.S. Discoveryand H.M.S. Chatham. With the help of recent research on the appearance of Vancouver’s flagship, H.M.S. Discovery, Mayo created a painting of the two vessels becalmed in Rosario Strait. The painting received a first-place award at the Mystic Seaport International Marine Art Exhibition in 2012.

A special exhibit of Mayo’s historical watercolors illustrating the voyages of Vancouver, James Cook and Robert Gray to the Pacific Northwest in the late 18th century will be on display in Western Libraries Special Collections from Jan. 20 through the end of March.
