Western to be recognized for contributions to Peace Corps March 3

Western Washington University will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps and its long-standing relationship with Western at a special event co-sponsored by the Career Services Center and the Peace Corps from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in Viking Union Room 552.

At the opening of the commemoration, WWU President Bruce Shepard will accept an award honoring Western’s contributions to the Peace Corps. After the presentation, seven faculty and staff will participate in a panel discussion to share their Peace Corps experience and its impact on their careers. Presenters include: Chuck Anholt, Economics Dept.; Ed Love, Marketing and Finance; Brooke Love, Huxley; Kathy Patrick, Huxley; Fred Rhoades, Biology; Beth Parker, Center for Service Learning; and Susan Anderson, Career Services Center.

Students of all majors who are considering international careers are encouraged to attend this presentation.

For many years, Western has been ranked as a “Top College” with Peace Corps. This year it rose to No. 3 on Peace Corps’ 2011 national rankings of mid-sized colleges and universities (between 5,001 and 15,000 undergraduates). Sixty undergraduate alumni are currently serving as Peace Corps volunteers, more than at much larger schools such as Arizona State University and Penn State University.
