Western extends fall 2024 confirmation deadline to June 1

Extension applies to all undergraduate students; allows more time for decision-making for students and families due to delays in FAFSA processing

Western Washington University (WWU) announced today that it will extend its Fall 2024 enrollment confirmation deadline to June 1, 2024 for all new undergraduate students.

The determination to issue this month-long extension comes after ongoing delays with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and with the most recent announcement made by the U.S. Department of Education that colleges and universities will not begin receiving students’ financial aid information from the FAFSA until mid-March of this year. This will in turn delay when students and their families may begin receiving financial aid offers from their universities of choice.

Shelli Soto, associate vice president for Enrollment Management at WWU said, "Western’s goal is to make high-quality education accessible to individuals from all backgrounds and life experiences. More than 83 percent of our new students submit a FAFSA each year and depend on financial aid. Given the latest information from the U.S. Department of Education, we believe that extending the deadline for confirming intent to enroll to June 1 is important to allow students and families time to assess all the resources available to them.”

Students and families are encouraged to apply for financial aid for the 2024-2025 academic year. Western's extended financial aid priority deadline is February 28. WWU intends to provide financial aid offers to students as soon as possible after WWU receives the student FAFSA information.

WWU will continue to monitor FAFSA developments as the days and weeks progress, and if further delays arise, the University will continue to provide information to students and families to ensure a streamlined admissions and financial aid process.

Families who may be impacted by this extension are encouraged to visit the WWU Admitted Students webpage, which provides additional details about confirming enrollment at Western Washington University, key deadlines, and information about accessing financial aid.
