Variety of upcoming events available through WWU Outdoor Center

The Associated Students Outdoor Center provides opportunities for Western students to experience the outdoors and learn different skill sets through excursions to different locations around Whatcom County.

Upcoming events offered by the Outdoor Center include:

  • Map and Compass Clinic at 4 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Outdoor Center. This clinic is free and will teach students how to read maps and use compasses, to triangulate their position, plot and follow a certain vector and get home safely.
  • Backcountry Cooking Clinic at 5 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Outdoor Center. Students will learn about cooking in the outdoors over the course of two hours. The $15 charge includes all ingredients and access to all equipment needed to create delicious meals.
  • Bike to Hike Fragrance Lake at 8 a.m. Nov. 6 at the Outdoor Center. The cost is $20 for students with their own bike and $30 for students who need to rent a bike. The trip will be a bike ride through the interurban trail to the trailhead of Fragrance Lake and then a two-mile hike to Fragrance Lake.
  • Rock Climbing at Mt. Erie at 8 a.m. on Nov. 13. Participants will meet at 8 a.m. at the Outdoor Center. The group will travel to Anacortes to climb Mt. Erie. The trip is open to people with all levels of climbing experience. The cost is $50 for Western students, faculty and staff or $60 for guests. Guests must be accompanied by a student, faculty or staff member.
