Transportation Office has latest info on detours, closures after bridge collapse south of Bellingham

At approximately 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, the bridge on I-5 crossing the Skagit River in Burlington collapsed as a result of an oversized truck hitting an overhead span. Three people were rescued from the river with only minor injuries. Alternate routes have been identified for travelers and plans are already underway to install a replacement span.

Many members of our campus community travel this corridor on a regular basis. The Washington Department of Transportation has identified the best alternate routes for travelers, and information on those detour routes, closures and delays will be regularly updated on the WWU Transportation website. We urge you to check this page before traveling and to be patient in your travels as alternate routes will cause delays in travel time.
