WWU professor Daniel Warner to receive 'Environmental Hero' award

Western Washington University College of Business and Economics professor Daniel Warner will be one of eight people to receive an “Environmental Hero” award for his work and dedication to the environment at the 8th Annual Environmental Heroes Award Celebration at 5:30 p.m., Friday, April 23 in the Bellwether Ballroom at One Bellwether Way in Bellingham.

Seats for the awards ceremony must be reserved in advance and cost $50 per person, which includes dinner.

The awards ceremony is hosted by RE Sources, a nonprofit environmental education organization that promotes sustainable communities through recycling, education, advocacy and conservation of natural resources.

Over the years Warner has been involved with several committees, including Pro-Whatcom and Futurewise Whatcom, to promote awareness about the effects of unlimited growth.

“Long before the limits of land and resources are reached, quality of life is compromised,” Warner said. “You can’t have infinite growth in a finite area.”

Heroes are nominated through an open community nomination process based on nominees’ service in protecting the environment; the selection group includes prior Heroes and members of RE Sources’ board and staff.

Warner said being selected for the award is a great honor.

“It is gratifying to be appreciated for years of work on these issues,” Warner said. “Too often critics of our system are dismissed and marginalized as ‘tree huggers.’”
