WWU Libraries to host poetry events April 13-14 during National Poetry Month

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Western Washington University Libraries is hosting a poetry reading by WWU’s Mary Cornish from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, in WWU’s Wilson Library Skybridge and a poetry “open mike” from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, also in the Skybridge.

Cornish, a professor at WWU’s Fairhaven College of Interdisciplanary Studies, will read poems from her book, “Red Studio,” in a reading called “The Marvelous Real.” Cornish’s poetry reading will explore the marvelous through the genre of magical realism.

The poetry open mike will feature poetry readings from select WWU faculty poets and students.

Also in celebration of National Poetry Month, WWU Libraries has put up two poetry related displays. One is a display of San Francisco poets and can be found on the Skybridge. The second display is of local and Seattle poets, including Western faculty who have published poetry books, and is located near Wilson Library’s reference desk.

Cornish’s book “Red Studio” won the 2006 FIELD Poetry Prize and was a finalist for the Washington State Book Award. Her work has also been published in numerous journals and anthologies.
